460: Nova Rising

Episode Information

Consensus: Marginal Thumbs Down (6/11 Positive Reviews)

The first few reviews are coming in on Nova Rising, the first show of the spring season and the latest story arc show.  Most reviewers are wishing that the show told them a little more about the story arc and didn't leave them hanging so much.  They say the show had a lot of expectation built up and needed to reveal a little more than it did, instead of just going back to square one.

Others, however, really enjoyed the show, noting the good use of Bernard's character and the emerging character duo of Alex and Cal.  Some appreciated the increasing tension of the Novacom story.

Excerpted Review by Corey (Another AIO Site):

...If you can judge the rest of the season by this episode, then we have got a pretty good season ahead of us. This episode was not as exciting, earth-shattering, or mysterious as OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS and RED HERRING. But it still added more mystery to AREM and showed us what Novacom is doing. It was also a great showcase for my favorite character: Bernard Walton.

AIO has always had kid character duos. Jack and Lucy. Jack and Oscar. Curt and Lucy. Jared and Dwayne. And now I think we have our next AIO kid character duo. Alex and Cal. As I said in my review of RED HERRING, they make a good team. Their personalities play off each other very well and the are used excellently when encountering AREM...

But the reason I like this episode so much is because of my favorite character: Bernard....I laughed so much during this episode, like when Bernard was in his office sharpening pencils...And as always we got some more great Bernardisms...

The season got off to a terrific start... (Link to original review)

Excerpted Review by George Rojas (AIO Webshack):

Unfortunately for me, Nova Rising did not bring any huge changes to the Novacom series, much less an end....

Okay, now I think it is time that I make one or two little complaints against Cal. For one, I don't think he is a very good actor. Couldn't Adventures in Odyssey have chosen a better person?...

Lastly, I think Bernard should have spoke with AREM at the end of Nova Rising, at least for a little bit....

Putting aside the few complaints I have, Nova Rising was actually quite decent. Compare it to the Spring 2000 season and a few other choice episodes, and you have yourself an excellent episode. I think that Adventures in Odyssey is going in a good direction with the Novacom series. They put in a good plot, and are sure to mix in an important lesson along the way. (Link to original review)

George gives the episode 8 stars (out of ten).

Comments by JP (Town Hall):

Not bad, but WAY too much hype. I was looking forward to some devastating revelation, all I got was more "tune in next week". I certainly hope that whoever they establish as the villain sticks around for a long time to come, though. I really miss Blackgaard.  (Link to original Town Hall post)

Excerpted Review by ShadowPaw (The Soda Fountain):

This is one of the episodes that I was really looking forward too, hoping it would bring about some great new revelations about Novacom...

The plot moved only slightly, and everything went back to square one once it was over.  But I think one of the aspects that hurt the show was the lack of production quality during some of the scenes.

Other things that disappointed me was that Bernard didn't speak with Arem when he appeared on his computer near the end...

Aside from all these gripes, it still wasn't that bad of an episode. Sure I was a disappointed, but it's mostly just because I had gone in expecting to learn something more. (Link to original review)

ShadowPaw gives the episode 3 1/2 stars (out of five).

Excerpted Review by Audrey (The Electric Palace):

This was a great ep... Is it just me, or does it seem that Alex and Cal are becoming the new "Dwayne/Jarred" pair. They go together really well. I can't wait to hear more from them.

And the big questions....Who is AREM? Is he really innocent like he said while talking to Cal and Alex? What does he want? (Link to original review)

Audrey gives the episode 4 stars (out of four).

Comments by Harrison, age 13 (Submitted):

I expected something really earth shattering to happen in Nova Rising, but I was kind of disappointed. I want to find our who AREM is, not about Bernard's window washing business. I also wanted Bernard to answer the Instant Message from AREM (or someone else). I hope these Nova episodes get better, because I am getting bored!

Harrison gives the episode 2 1/2 stars.

Comments by Jeremy (Town Hall):

I was pretty disappointed in it! Not much new info. (Link to original Town Hall post)

Comments by Dawey (Town Hall):

It was not a GREAT episode (little disappointed), but it was all right. I wonder what will be the next episode in the Novacom series? Or was that the end? It couldn't be. Maybe the next Novacom is The W.E. I'll just have to wait.... (Link to original Town Hall post)

Dawey gives the episode probably... a 7.5 to 8? (not sure, must think a little bit) (out of ten)

Comments by Richard Maxwell (Town Hall):

So was I. It still leaves you hanging. (Link to original Town Hall post)

Comments by Andy G Harvey (Town Hall):

That ep is FREAKY! I LOVE IT!!!!!! (Link to original Town Hall post)

Tune in for this great show!  Looking forward to the next episode continuing this show. I'm glad this show is finally hear like other odyssey fans are.

461: BTV: Obedience

Episode Information

Consensus: Thumbs Up (11/11 Positive Reviews)

The first few reviews are coming in on BTV: Obedience, and the response is positive.  People like the wide variety of skits and it seemed to be a good move to divide the show up among the writers.  Although the listeners missed Eugene and the "Did You Know?" segments., they especially appreciated the "Name him..." and "Gideon" sketches.

Excerpted Review by Audrey (The Electric Palace):

I liked this ep. I don't consider it to be the best BTV ep the AIO team has done, but it taught a good lesson. The only things that seemed to be missing were: Eugene, BTV music, and "..BTV we'll be right back". Also in this ep. I missed the "Did you know" segment. (Link to original review)

Audrey gives the episode 3 1/2 stars (out of four).

Excerpted Review by Corey (Another AIO Site):

I have always really liked the BTV episodes ever since they were introduced. I love the fast paced variety show type style, the silly voices and I especially like the wacky humor. So I was definitely not let down with this episode....

This BTV was definitely not lacking in its humor...great lines, hilarious moments, and silly characters...

Now I must say that this episode was made even funnier with Corey Burton's great performance. He portrayed many different character types in this episode and he played them all excellently...

There were a few small quibbles I had though. Such as that there weren't any silly sound effects.... Also there was no "BTV will be right back" or "Now we return to BTV" when the show went to or came back from a commercial. There were no trivia segments either....

One more thing, Where was Eugene?....A great episode all around. And one that I'm sure will be considered a classic. (Link to original review)

Corey gives the episode 4 1/2 stars (out of five).

Excerpted Review by Chris Barrow, (The Electric Palace):

Okay, I don't really care for the BTV episodes, however, this one was pretty good. I think my favorite parts would be the spoof on ABC's "Who Wants To Be A Millionare"-- "Is that your final answer?"....

All and all I liked this episode. It's not one of my favorites, not even close--but it is pretty good. (Link to original review)

Chris gives the show three stars (out of four).

Comments by Ann, age 11 (Submitted):

The only problem I could see was that they didn't read their Bible very well as far as the story of Naaman is concerned. Elisha didn't answer the door until AFTER Naaman had bathed in the Jordan, that's one of the things that made Naaman so MAD. Any way, other than that. It was a great show.

Ann gives the show four stars (out of four).

Comments by Matt (Submitted):

This was GREAT! The best BTV since Envy! I loved it! I thought it was great the way they put the shorties into the episode. Although I still don't understand WHY they weren't included in the album version of the episodes that they originally aired. BTV has proven it doesn't need Novacom for GREAT episodes!!!!!

Matt gives the show four stars (out of four).

Comments by JamesM, age 23 (Submitted):

Great ep!! Keep up good work!! Nice B-TV. Particularly liked Gideon and the game show. Anyways funny moments and a good job.

Not Bad! I really enjoyed the Bible story. I just wish we knew more about Nova! *sigh* Guess we'll have to wait out another week.

Paul gives the show three stars (out of four).

Comments by Paul Brown (Submitted):

Great show!

This new BTV is great .There's even a game show like "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" This new BTV lives up to all the other BTV with great lessons. This time the lesson is obedience. They use a dog school for one of the lessons about being obedience. You might even hear a familiar name in the writer credits at the end of the show. :) These new shows are getting better and better. Great job, Odyssey writers!

Paul gives the show five stars (out of five).

Comments by KevinJ (Town Hall):

I thought this BTV was pretty good and had a good amount of humor in it. It's good to see Odyssey staples like BTV and KIDS radio back again. Although I would've liked to hear Eugene. (Link to original Town Hall post)

Excerpted Review by ShadowPaw (The Soda Fountain):

This was a great example of how to do a B-TV episode the right way. It also marked the longest writer and director credits AIO has ever seen! Each writer contributed in some shape or form, which made for a wide variety of enjoyable skits...

The production of the episode was great, with the usual variety of zany and crazy sound effects we've come to expect from the B-TV episodes. The stories themselves were very well done, and true to the essence found in the Bible...

I'm not often a big fan of the B-TV episodes, not because they're bad... it's just that I never really adjusted to the format. But rest assured this is one of the best B-TV's AIO has had, and I hope they can continue to make them in the same way. (Link to original review)

ShadowPaw gives the episode 4 1/2 stars (out of five).

462: The W. E.

Episode Information

Consensus: Thumbs Up (12/17 Positive Reviews)

Reviewers are divided on "The W. E."  While some are insisting that Whit would never change Whit's End, the majority were charmed by the way that Whit questioned himself.  Most agreed that they liked the character of Mary, who seemed to reference Whit's wife.  As the episode left some un-answered questions about the future of Whit's End, fans were anticipating them being answered in future shows. Many also agreed that it was good to hear Nick Mulligan again.

And quite a few people pointed out a parallel between Whit changing his shop and the Odyssey split episodes and Spring 2000 season.

Comments by Michael P., age 17 (Submitted):

Great Episode!!! It did seem a little rushed at the end, and left a few things unanswered, but it was great!!! Never better!!!

Michael gives the show four stars (out of four).

Excerpted Review by George Rojas (AIO Webshack):

I thought that this episode was alright, although you could say that Whit didn't quite practice what he preached. And his reaction to a little competition was different than when "Blackgaard's Castle" was opened in "The Battle" and when the con artist approached him in "By Any Other Name".

It seemed that The W.E. either warped Whit's character, or developed it (meaning showing that he wasn't perfect)....

Anyway, once again, like most of the Novacom episodes so far, The W.E. ended in almost the same position as the start. And all we found out from this episode was that Novacom opened the "Novacom Kids Center", and the whole 25 minutes hardly dealt on Novacom at all!

Let's see, The W.E. introduced two new characters, Ricky and Mary Hopkins. I wonder how far Adventures in Odyssey and the Novacom series with take the two people. Perhaps Ricky is the one Connie might have a "love interest" with. Oh, so many questions! We'll just have to wait and see what the answers are. (Link to original review)

George gives the episode 7.5 stars (out of ten).

Excerpted Review by Switchflood (Switchflood.com):

...What I am trying to say is that we have all seen this before....It's almost as though the writers decided to give [the Novacom Children's Center] neither a good nor bad "slant".... Such as that is, it boils down to the fact the the NCC is merely a plot device to give Whit a crisis of some kind, and a conflict with which to deal....

What is happening in the episode is that there are no kids at Whit's End. They are all at the NCC, experiencing all the wonders of modern technology. Warning signals! Modern technology and ::gasp!:: computer games!... Connie comes in and utters an untruism: "I can't remember a slump this bad."  Apparently her memory isn't what is used to be, considering that they had an even worse slump at the beginning of the episode "Poor Loser."...

Overall, I liked the ep. A few little procedural gripes, and all that jazz, and the fact the the episode ended up right back where it started, and seemed a little hurried in the process (jumping around from scene to scene rather quickly, but not all that quickly, as compared to, say, "Blackgaard's Revenge").

Nice idea, good production, but nothing terrible special. Not really a story-arc episode, apart from the fact that it mentions Novacom, the malicious entity that is for some unknown reason interested in Odyssey....(Link to original review)

Switchflood gives the episode 3 1/2 stars (out of five).

Comments by Errol (Submitted):

Like JoyElectric, I am many years past the "age recommendations" for AIO. I have listened to "Odyssey" since "Karen" originally aired. I am still loving the series today. I believe the W. E teaches us that technology can't replace relationships. Kids do need a place to be kids. Technology shouldn't replace COMMUNICATION! I believe that was Natalie O'Hare (Jenny Whitaker) that showed up in this ep, and what better, familiar voice was there to tell Whit that he was forgetting the original intent of Whit's End? There was also a parallel drawn between the growing pains of the actual series in the last year that left many long and short time AIO fans disappointed. I'm glad that like "Whit's End ", the writers of "AIO" have decided to stay with the same girl they brought to the dance in the first place.

Errol gives the show 3 1/2 stars (out of four).

Excerpted Review by Corey (Another AIO Site):

Okay, to be honest, I thought the plot was definitely not the most original storyline AIO has had. In fact, it was pretty predictable.... But actually other than the predictable plot the rest of the episode was really great. It was pretty funny in places too.

Speaking of Nick, it was good to hear him again. It has been a little while since we've heard him....Another thing that was good to hear was Whit and Tom talking together.

In fact I liked hearing Whit actually think, experiment, and then make a mistake. Whit isn't perfect.

What really seemed to stick out, well, at least to me, was how this episode seemed to look back and look ahead.

One more thing about this episode was the Novacom Kid's Center. It wasn't in the episode that much, but it still peaked my interest.

So despite the predictable plot, we had another great episode that brought back familiar people and friendships. (Link to original review)

Corey gives the episode four stars (out of five).

This episode could have been called "Opportunity Knocks II" with way it ended!!

Wow! Here I am, twice the supposed "intended age," and I am loving the recent number of shows out there right now. This does not sound like a show that is lingering on in its 13th year, trying to figure out what to do next (like so many sitcoms that hit the decade mark do). AIO is alive and well, and still finding challenges for Whit; and we learn that even Whit makes mistakes now and then. Whit does some soul-searching with Tom...a scene that I love because the bond between those two goes all of the way back to the very first Family Portraits show.  Something I like even better is that Tom finally has to put Whit in his place by telling him to stop feeling sorry for himself...something that hasn't been done in years. Later in the show, I really liked how Nathaniel and Whit are just talking one-on-one over the Babel display, with all of the noise and confusion of other kids in the background (Was the Tower of Babel signifying something here??). Finally, I really enjoyed the parallel between Whit's End and AIO...both have had some growing pains in the past, but they are not about the latest trend or gimmick.

Joy gives the show 3 1/2 stars (out of four).

Excerpted Review by ShadowPaw (The Soda Fountain):

(Comparing the show to "By Any Other Name") Whit is against changing the name of his "floundering business" to protect him from the "big corporations". Isn't that exactly what is going on in this episode?....Has Whit really contradicted his own beliefs? I don't know the answer to that question, but in reality... I suppose it doesn't matter.  Sure you can call that a continuity hole if you'd like, but the episode itself was very enjoyable.

It was a story about Whit's End itself, bringing up past values and promises that Whit's End was originally founded upon, packaged with a lovely cameo from Natalie O'Hare, the voice of Jenny Whittaker.... Now, I'll be the first to admit that I feel this was one of Paul Herlinger's strongest performances as Whit yet....

We even got to hear what Nick's status was at Whit's End....

One great thing about this episode is that it symbolizes that many huge things are going to change in Odyssey in the coming weeks, months, and years.... (Link to original review)

ShadowPaw gives the episode 4 1/2 stars (out of five).

Marshal Younger Does it Again! This is a GREAT Episode! We're back to Classic AIO, Whit's re-thinking of the ideals Whit's End result in some funny interaction, massive changes, and we get the result: his new Shop "The W. E." The Kids come in droves, but they don't gather around the counter and talk with Whit anymore. A very familiar sounding-lady comes to the W. E. and reminds Whit about the reasons he started Whit's End. Odyssey needs a place where kids can just be kids. Whit wonders if that's enough, if maybe Whit's End can reach more kids in other places. Put Simply, a GREAT Show, teaching that technology can't replace relationships. People are always the more important.

OdysseyFan gives the show four stars (out of four).

Whit would NOT do this. Ever. Remember what happened with Blackgaard's Castle. I hope there is Connellsville Whit's End. It'd be awesome.

Jerry Joe gives the show 1/2 star (out of four).

Comments by Paul Brown (Submitted):

There's a new places for kids to hang out in Odyssey. It's called Novacom Kids Center. It's an upto date arcade play room for kids. Back at Whit's End things are going downhill in business.  Whit is feeling left out of the kids lives and tries to change his shop with their ideas.  He even renames Whit's End...the W.E.

Nathaniel and Whit realize it's just not the same as it was being Whit's End. How dose this adventure end? Tune in and listen on the net on real audio or buy the tape.

Paul gives the show 4 stars (out of five).

Comments by Kevin Jay, age 15 (Submitted):

I thought that The W.E. was a pretty good episode. I also thought we're finally going somewhere with the story line. I was glad to see Nick Mulligan show up as still working at Whit's End. I didn't know what had happened to him there. I'm glad to see Whit thinking again!! It's been so long since we've seen him do that! I think he had a good reason to change Whit's End. His ministry wasn't going like it always had. Once he thought about it though, he saw that he had made a wrong choice. I think the idea to make more Whit's Ends is both good and bad. He'll need to still have time for the kids in Odyssey, but it'll be great for Connellsville. I wish we could've heard from Eugene and for sure if Whit's End was changing back all the way. Also, will Novacom's kid's center burn to the ground? :) lol. This was an overall good episode.

Kevin gives the show 3 1/2 stars (out of four) and adds the following argument:

People have been asking why Whit would ever change Whit's End. Whit explained it while he talked to Tom. He didn't change everything because there was a demand to do it. He did it because he thought he wasn't reaching out the kids anymore. So he wanted to change Whit's Ends so that's its main objective—to reach kids—would be accomplished. He changed the name probably to show that it was a little different inside. In By Any Other Name, it's important to remember that the sales man didn't want Whit to change anything in the shop! All he wanted Whit to do was change all the names...which is like lying that things are different. Well, with W.E., things in the shop are different, hence the name change. Whit was going through a time of doubting in his life, so this is what he did. As Chris said at the end, he wanted to make sure what God told him to do was really what God told him and wanted him to do.

Comments by Carol, age 16 (Submitted):

Kind of boring. I mean what was a point other than the fact that there might be another Whit's End staring soon. Everyone was saying the same thing , THE OLD WHIT'S END IS BETTER! So why are they trying to change it?!? I don't get it. Seems like they keep introducing new angels to Odyssey and not enough stories with a good lesson. Maybe they ran out of good stories. *sigh* It's not like the good old days. Oh and were was Eugene? Nick's a poor substitute for him!

Carol gives the show 2 1/2 stars (out of four).

Comments by JamesM, age 23 (Submitted):

Great ep! It was good how whit wanted to draw kids in and saw how some ideas were not as good. He experimented and gave ideas and he asked kids for their input and it was good.  The end added some new mystery. Who is this lady?  Why did she give me an uncomfortable feeling like she may be bad or at least involved in Novacom?  Will Whit build a new Whit's End in Connellsville? Keep tuning in!

463: Green Eyes and Yellow Tulips

Episode Information

Consensus: Thumbs Up (10/10 Positive Reviews)

Reviews for "Green Eyes" are the most positive of the season so far, with people giving the show an enthusiastic rating and raving about Connie's new "friend," saying that he'll make a good match.  People are praising the good lines in the show as well as the use of Bart and Rodney Rathbone.  Some of the reviewers are heralding it as Kathy Wierenga's best episode.

Comments by Paul Brown (Submitted):

Love is in the air for Connie. The new guy in town meets Connie...his name is Robert Mitchell.  Things seam to click between them right off even though Mitch works for Novacom. Bart is up to his old tricks staging a protest against Novacom and using Whit's name with out asking him. And what's the deal with Rodney? He tries sweet-talking Connie.  What is he up to? Also Novacom rips off the the Imagination Station for a TV show called the Destination Station.

Paul gives the show 4 stars (out of four).

I really enjoyed this one. Finally, a story for Connie. Mitch sounds like he is going to be a good character, and its good to know that Jack and Joanne are still around. Keep it up!

Overall, I thought that G.E. and Y.T. was a pretty good episode. I thought that Connie's attempts at being a computer expert were funny. I really like Mitch. I HOPE that he and Connie get married, but I would rather that they didn't if their relationship would be as long as E & K. I want it to be: they date, they fall in love, they get married. Simple as that. Beside that, I wasn't really sure why Rodney wanted to "butter up Connie."

Harrison gives the show 3 stars (out of four).

GREAT EP!! Cool stuff!  It will be cool to see how Mitch and Connie work out. It's cool...he's a Christian doing Bible study.  It teaches us not to jump to conclusions. It's cool...Steve Burns is both. Great interaction!  The whole Bart - Rodney, Connie-Rodney thing is cool. And Whit and Mitch...cool ep...awesome!

James gives the show 4 stars (out of four).

Comments by Errol (Submitted):

I very much enjoyed this ep. It's great to have Bart Rathbone back in his true vain—coming up with one hair brained plot after another, and son Rodney bungling through the plot not even having a clue. Seems like old times. And who's this Mitch? He works for Novacom, goes to Bible studies, respects Whit, and perhaps, and at last...a love interest for Connie? This is getting good. This ep also marked the long awaited re-appearance of Joanne Allen played by veteran actress Janet Waldo. Maybe we will be hearing from Jack in the not too distant future. I just wonder how long Mitch will remain with Novacom, or will he later find himself working for Whit. Just how much does Mitch know about Novacom? How will this affect his relationship to Connie? The only element sadly missing from this season is the absence of Eugene. Writing and acting was over all great with Bart & Rodney walking away with some of the best lines. Looking forward to seeing this plot line develope. Keep it ! up AIO Team!

Errol gives the show 3 1/2 stars (out of four).

Comments by KevinJ (Submitted):

Great episode, we actually see something happening in Odyssey!! Mitch seems like a cool guy, and a good one for Connie. Bart's lines were great, and once again, Rodney's personality is hilarious. This is defiantly Kathy's best episode yet. She said she wanted to write something from a girl's perspective, and you could tell this was, but it was still a good episode :). No major new developments with Novacom, except that they tried to copy the Imagination Station and make it into a TV show, which isn't a bad idea:). Except for the violence. Good episode, I hope they keep it up.

Kevin gives the show 4 stars (out of four).

I about fell out of my chair when Bart talked about his right to "cheap speech"!! Good show! It had some VERY funny moments, some serious, and left us hanging...all while learning a little bit more about Novacom. I find it very ironic that the first sentence out of Connie's mouth to Mitch is "You're not Eugene!!" She's probably happy about that :)

Joy gives the show 4 stars (out of four).

Excerpted Review by Switchflood (Switchflood.com):

Oh mama, we have hit the payload! Just before we start, I have picked a truly exciting and opportune time to start writing about AIO again....

Let me begin by saying the episode will charm you, and because I am a real sucker for a romantic - yes, romantic - story, it really, really charmed me...

But now. Oh yes, listen to the dialogue that begins this ep. Listen to the way Connie replies to "Mitch." Vintage, vintage Connie! Listen to the "I'm trying to be funny around a cute girl with a yellow sweater" line about being a box-carrying Robin Hood that Mitch springs....

First Rodney sighting in a while, at least for me. Used well. I especially enjoyed the way that he said "I'll have her eating palms out of my hand." Boom budda boom ching! Again, vitage Rodney....

So in the grand scheme of Odyssey romances, this is a b i g g y....

Of course, the episode does belong in the Spring 2001 season, because after all, every episode must have something to do with Novacom. Every controversy, and every visit from a strange person with ulterior motives must be from Novacom. All that is evil on Odyssey TV must be a product of Novacom. Novacom, Novacom, no-vacom. I realize of course that this may just be the time where they saturate us with Novacom plotlines, then leave it for a while, and then have Whit take Connie to Chicago...

::note to self: beg writers to continue this plotline::

All I have for this ep are praises. Original from an Odyssey standpoint, well used characters, and it was very, very nice to see people like Joanne just coming in to Whit's End. You have to realize that she hasn't done that for a while.  All in all, it was a very GOOD EPISODE! (Link to full review)

Switchflood gives the episode 4 1/2 stars (out of five).

464: The Triangle, Part 1
465: The Triangle, Part 2

Episode Information

Consensus: Thumbs Up (17/17 positive reviews, 100%)

Reviews on the Triangle are positive.  People enjoyed the look back at Whit's past, and enjoyed some of the continuity mentions throughout the episode.  Many liked finding out how some of the nuances of the characters came to be.  Many also noted how close Young Jack Allen's voice sounded to the one we know and love.

Others pointed out that the story was predictable and that a number of clichés were used throughout.  Both episodes were short and used a "shorty" which people didn't think blended in with the love story.

Comments by Ian Chai, age 34 (Submitted):

Most of what I wanted to say has already been said by the others, except this: I thought Young Jack's voice was fantastic, how it *really* sounded like Jack, except younger! That's a really rare thing -- I don't remember it ever happening before on AIO. He's got that same indefinable "something" to his voice.

USC -- so did Whit run into Dr. Dobson there? :-) Naah, he was a generation before -- Dr. Dobson was just a kid during WW2.

Ian gives the episode 4 stars (out of four).

This was a great episode! Though often predictable (Jenny in elevator, Jack's girlfriend), I loved it. Although, I do wonder why they put that shorty. It did not seem to belong there. I hope Part II is as good - or better!

Dawey gives the episode 4 stars (out of four).

Jack Allen lives!! After hear Joanne Allen last time After a way-too-long absence, we finally hear Allen Young's kind voice back on Odyssey. Most of the story is in flashback, as Whit and Jack tell the story of Whit and Jenny's first meeting. Just like when we heard Jack tell the story of Clara and hear another side of Whit (one that is very different from who he is today), we hear of a young Jack who is far more insecure and immature than we wise man we hear now. Good show!!

I thought these two episodes were really great!! It seems that AIO is getting better and better this season. I only had one question—didn't Jack tell Connie about his wife Emily in "A Question about Tasha?" Here Connie acts like she has no clue who Emily is.

This was a great ep. We hear Jack and Whit tell Connie, in flashbacks, how Jenny came to meet and fall in love with Whit. Only problem—Jenny was Jack's girl!  What we learn from this story is, first of all, take your problems to the Lord. Secondly, true friendship will last through thick and thin. Jack and Whit would have two such tough face offs with each other. In this ep, the hurt young Jack didn't want to see Whit anymore. And later in "Clara", the brokenhearted Whit telling Jack, " I don't want to see you ever again ". Through thick and thin, Jack and Whit have remained true friends. This was a heartwarming, sentimental story. Extreme kudos should go out to Nathan Hoobler, who penned this ep. Good Show Nathan!!

Errol gives the episode 4 stars (out of four).

This is a great episode because we know Jack knew Jenny. And also he dated her. Plus how he knew Emily. And that he and Whit went to College together.

Definitely the best episodes I have heard in a long time! Very well written, great look back at Jack and Whit at college age. This story explained a lot, really building on Jack's comment in "For Whom The Wedding Bells Toll", telling us more about Jack working at an auction house, and introducing us to Emily, Jack's wife. And a surprise at the end—no, not in the episode, but after it. Chris: "Today's episode was written by Nathan Hoobler . ." Congratulations, Nathan!

Excerpted Review by Switchflood (Switchflood.com):

I'd like to pin up another GOOD EPISODE ALERT! on the old poster board...

Remember back when I was whining and complaining (shocked that I would do that?) about Jack Allen, how he's perfect and never does anything wrong? And how Whit is less than perfect and seems to often do things slightly less than right? Someone seems to have switched some personalities here! In college, it appears that Whit was the mage of all things spiritual, while Jack dropped himself readily into a cesspool of self-pity. Strange indeed....

Strangely enough, this episode embodies what I have been begging for for a long time. Whit has a past, Jack and Whit have a past together, people just walk into Whit's End: hilarity ensues, tragedy, comedy, romance, and connectivity all in one neat little two-episode package.....

Now about the scene in the elevator, when Whit was piling insult upon insult in regards to a certain columnist's mental and Anglophonic inferiority, who didn't know who the girl was? Raise your hands. Ah. So what is your name? You have never watched a Romantic Comedy, have you?....

Hey, and aparently "Of Men And Of Angels" tickled both Malachi and Jenny. Nice mention there, for the continuity thing. Very nice indeed!...

....And some of us, when we heard about the letter, we thought, okay, knowing that Emily was Jack's wife, he is reading what he wrote to her to tell her that he truly loves her and not Jenny. Then he's going to dump Jenny like she was going out of style.  Oops, curveball!...

....As far as content, the episode is pretty good. At some points, the dialogue suffers slightly, but hey, I'll give Mr Hoobler points for trying. Also, the ending is extremely trite, as Jack repeats himself. It makes a good sound on the radio, but in real life, I have rarely, if ever, heard someone do that. Closure, you call it. It's called to me, a pet peeve.

Other than than, bravo, I enjoyed the whole thing. If flowed, baby. (Link to full review)

Part One:

Another love story! Last week we had "Green Eyes and Yellow Tulips"-this week "The Triangle." I may have enjoyed it more than "Green Eyes and Yellow Tulips."

The only thing I disliked about this episode was the shorty at the end. Though it is one of my favorite shorties, it took away all the romance of the past episode. Altogether, a good episode. (Link to original review)

Dave gives part one 8 1/2 stars (out of ten).

Part Two:

The second part has rolled around with surprising results. The scene I liked the most was when Whit was talking to Jack and realizes that he's on microphone. Hilarious! A wonderful conclusion. But one thing bothered me-when this two-parter is put on an album, they will be about 22 minutes each! I prefer the longer ones. (Link to original review)

Part One:

BEAUTIFUL classic, even though I knew what was coming (like Jenny was the girl in elevator, and Jack was dating Jenny). I loved it. I knew that Whit "stole" Jenny from Jack. Jack told Connie once (she must have forgotten).  I loved it how silly Whit must have felt and this relationship with Jack and Emily and Jack and Whit and Jenny. (Dr. Dobson went to USC—that must be the Whit connection...and he met HIS wife there.) I wasn't prepared for Jack being in love with Jenny. But classic Odyssey. Classic ep! Can't wait for next week. AWESOME AWESOME

Funny how whit said he could never be a teacher. He was an AWARD winning teacher and even then he loved kids he wanted to write books for them. Young Jacks voice was great.

I thought it was funny how Jack said he never gonna more than friends than Emily. Jack told Connie about him and Emily in "A Question about Tasha."

Part Two:

LOVED IT! GREAT! We shouldn't sulk and stuff like that. Don't be mad.  Interesting to hear the lesson come from non-Christian.  And it tells how Whit and Jenny came together. Gave hints to Emily and Jack. GREAT EP.

James gives the episode 4 stars (out of four).

466: Snow Day

Episode Information

Consensus: Marginal Thumbs Up (8/14 Positive Reviews)

Reviews are mixed for "Snow Day."  Many really enjoyed the humor of the episode and some commented on the music and the overall "fun" feel.  Others felt it wasn't up to the usual "kids slice of life" standard and that it needed more substance to it.  They further noted that a mother wouldn't send her child across town on a mission like this and that Rodney wouldn't go to all this trouble just for a tin of cookies.

Comments by JoyElectric, age 24 (Submitted):

IMO, the first real "weak" episode this year, in a year that's been incredible. While Alex and Cal are fun together, it's still pretty much just "The kids run from Rodney" for a half hour. Even though the cookies are gone in the end, it's all right anyway.

Two things seem odd about this episode. First, the radio says that everyone is asked to stay in unless it's necessary...so his mother asks him to WALK out in the bitter cold to get to Grandma's?? Second, since when did the Bones get back together?? I'm pleased that Rodney and the Bones still exist, but I thought they disbanded "years" ago.

Either way, the usual kids seemed a lot less annoying this times (probably because Liz wasn't there), and it's a rare time I didn't like John Beebee's work. Oh well, I'm not going to lose sleep over one episode I didn't care for :)

JoyElectric gives the show 2 stars (out of four).

Comments by Gimp, age 19 (Submitted):

As far as I'm concerned, the only thing that saved Snow Day was the fact that it wasn't a split ep. Since it was a whole ep, it made it a little better. While I tend to like the "Kids' Slice of Life" eps almost as well as the others, I can't honestly say that about Snow Day.

The plot was okay. Alex being excited about it being a snow day and having no school was almost good, but WAY overdone. If they had cut out the part of him singing, it would have made that particular scene a lot better. Then Rodney chasing the kids all day to get the cookies? That was pretty low....even for Rodney. And since Alex said there were nine cookies on the ground and (should have been) three left in the tin...I was left asking Whatever happened to the three cookies that "should have" been in the tin?

Now there are a few parts that I liked. Cal and Alex using a garbage can lid as a shield from the snow balls and then later as a sled to get down Gumper's Hill. The description of Cal's snowman was somewhat amusing. Those scenes weren't too bad.

The music was actually pretty good, considering what type of ep it was. If there had been "mysterious music" it would have thrown the whole thing off.

Gimp gives the show 2 stars (out of four).

Comments by Jodi (Submitted):

Kind of corny. The idea was a cool one, but it just didn't seem to come off right, somehow. There was some funny lines, but overall not one of the greatest episodes. And don't people who trip running forward usually fall on their face, not their back?

Jodi gives the show 2 1/2 stars (out of four).

Comments by Errol (Submitted):

In Snowday, we follow the escapades of Alex and Cal... Their mission...to get the cookies to Grandma's house. Suddenly, out of the forest comes the big, bad wolf in the form of Rodney Rathbone. A major chase and snowball fight follows. In the end, Our boys make it safe and sound to Granny's abode and out of the clutches of Rodney, who as always...loses again. Only the cookies don't come out unscathed, mores the pity. The lesson?  As we run this race (our Christian walk) with patience, the enemy will appear, there will be circumstances, firewalls, road blocks. But, if we don't grow tired of doing good...we will reap the reward. That is a promise from the master. We have grown to call these type eps "Slice of Life" shows. I liked it. Plus it's always great to have Steve Burns back as Rodney!

Errol gives the show 3 stars (out of four).

Comments by Travis (Town Hall):

[In response to earlier posts]

I agree with you on the part about the cookies but dude, lighten up a bit. That show was supposed to give a lesson not win an Academy Award. I [liked it], it was a lot of fun and I think the script was good. (Link to original Town Hall post)

Comments by RadioGirl (Town Hall):

Snow Day would make my "top ten worst episodes" list, in a heartbeat. The premise (that a mother would send her child several miles on foot in 15 inches of snow to deliver hot cookies to her mom) was not vaguely believable. Also, I can't imagine Rodney, (one of my favorite characters -- normally!) going to these lengths for a tin of cookies. He's a juvenile delinquent, not a cookie thief! The plot was predictable. I don't think I laughed once (ok, maybe once -- when Alex was singing about "snow days" at the beginning!), and I don't think it taught a lesson at all. Sorry -- thumbs down. (Link to original Town Hall post)

Comments by Corey (Town Hall):

The lesson in SNOW DAY wasn't really pointed out that well. I mean we just had a small little blip at the end of the ep and Chris expanding on the lesson.

The plot was SILLY, but that is one of the reasons I liked it. Sure it is probally my least favorite of the season so far, but it had great lines and overall it was just a fun episode. Something that the split episodes were supposed to be but overall failed. It remined me of some old time radio shows I listen to. The sound effects were fun too. Like the exploisons when they threw snowballs. The slow motion thing at the end. It was all just really fun. (Link to original Town Hall post)

Corey gives the show 3 1/2 stars (out of five).

Excerpted Review by Switchflood (Switchflood.com):

..."Snow Day" [is] a puzzling and sometimes farcical experiment in abstract... A few examples of these involve... a "writers block" day resolved by picking up a dictionary and at random selecting a word, or the always-viable excuse for an off-the-wall episode: "I was parodying a movie."

Snow Day, like Harlow Doyle, has it's moments. Being as few and far between as they are (20 minutes by my reckoning), it's not really worth talking about them. However, they are, as far as I can tell, the opening song, and Chris's closing remarks....

The first item amiss in the episode is that it is being narrated. Why? you ask. I don't think I can explain it, and I hesitate to believe that anyone else can. Alex has a great voice, and yes, I would encourage the AIO staff to use it at any possible juncture, but why does he narrate this? .... Then again, on second thought, maybe it's because this episode needs the voiceovers. I would say it like this: "Snow Day" is an action-packed farce filled with furious action that needs to be franticly explained lest, to the radio audience, it seem not to make sense....

And as Chris is wont to do, ...  she digs deep and manages to scrape some semblance of a "lesson" falsely so called, from this episode.

Boom budda boom clunk. The thing that really clinched this one for me was the absurd use of sound effects. See the "boom budda boom clunk" above? That's a garbage can substituted for the normal cymbal. It doesn't look right - it doesn't sound right. Neither does a boot coming off with a loud popping sound seem right. Nor a glove coming off with a loud popping noise sound right. Neither does a snowball sound right coming in like a mortar re-entering the atmosphere.

So, let out your collective breaths. We are looking at this season's bomb #1. (Link to full review)

467: Broken Window

Episode Information

Consensus: Thumbs Up (13/14 Positive Reviews)

Reviews are very positive for "Broken Window."  People enjoyed the courtroom drama and especially Rodney Rathbone's part of the show.  Although the show got a few negative comments about being predictable and similar to "The Scales of Justice," they still thought it was funny and enjoyable episode.

Comments by Sarah, age 21 (Submitted):

I thought this episode was the worst episode since "Idol Minds". It would have been great as two different episodes with the Connie/Mitch thing in one and the whole broken window thing in another but together they just didn't match up. Also I'm unsure why Odyssey is so flippantly ignoring the convictions of some of their fans.... Please note that I myself see absolutely NOTHING wrong with dating, but I realize that some people do, so I'm not going to try to offend them when they have reasonable arguments for their position.

Actor Steve Burns once said (Jokingly) that his advice for AIO was "more Rodney Rathbone." Well Steve has gotten his wish this season. In "Broken Window", after Rodney is ejected from Whit's End, a window winds up broken. The suspects...who else?  Rodney...Rodney..and Rodney. My favorite part was Rodney putting Mitch (Both characters played by Burns) on the stand as a character witness -- Laughs everywhere!! As a matter of fact, Rodney almost used the same type logic that Bart would use, and kind of sounded like Bart. Yep, a chip off the ol' block--Head. The lesson—Don't pre-judge people. Good lines, and Kudos to Steve Burns.

Errol gives the show 3 stars (out of four).

Comments by JoyElectric, age 24 (Submitted):

A nice improvement of last week, IMO. Sure, It was a little predictable, and we seen Rodney get the blame for everything bad in Odyssey before (anyone else figure out who did it Within a few minutes?), but again Rodney gets some great lines. The other "other story" (NOT a split, but rather a subplot), Connie's get mad at Mitch for not showing up at a dinner "date." Watch out, Connie's a little more ditzy around guys than one may have realized.

JoyElectric gives the show 3 stars (out of four).

Comments by James M, age 23 (Submitted):

Funny! Cool stuff. The whole trial and jumping to conclusions and judging...very funny. I did know Whit broke the window. I figured it out and Connie must not have been thinking—if last night WAS Saturday night, she would have been at church and Whit's end would be closed—on Sunday. But all in all a funny ep.

I enjoyed this show, although parts of it did really sound familiar. It seems like the theme of not jumping to conclusions has been used a lot in Odyssey. But it still was enjoyable and Connie was her usual self - especially in dealing with Mitch. I'm glad the writers are continuing that storyline.

Comments by Dave (Submitted):

Very, very funny. Almost too funny. We start off with old Alex hiding his bat. Why? Because of a broken window. The gang at "Whit's End" decide to take court. And Mitch is bailiff! It turns out Connie and Mitch have been meeting for dinner! (Connie and Mitch. Sitting in a tree. K-i-s-s-i-n-g) They've been talking! (Connie and Mitch. Sitting in a tree. T-a-l-k-i-n-g) So many laughs! (We're just practicing our spelling. S-p-l-l-i-n-g) There was nothing I found wrong in this episode. As you may have noticed, the music was a take-off some T.V. show.

Comments by Corey (Town Hall):

Yeah, I figured out that it was Whit too. But only a little bit before Connie so I can't really blame her.

The rest of the episode was neat too. Although the whole court premise was a lot like SCALES OF JUSTICE. I really enjoyed it.

Hey, did anyone notice that this is the second episode with the Connie and Mitch relationship and the second episode in the E/K relationship (..NATURALLY I ASSUMED) were both about jumping to conclusions? (Link to original post)

Corey gives the show 3 3/4 stars (out of five).

Excerpted Review by Switchflood (Switchflood.com):

... "Broken Window" is a good episode, and it really is getting scary when AIO has a three-alert season, where I have to say that almost every episode is worthy of a second, or even third, listening.

So what is it that attracted me to it? First of all, I will tell you that it is not the premise of the episode, that worn out old "let the kids court decide" thing. It already happened, with Rodney and Isaac. And Lucy. But we won't mention her, because I'll get a, you know, headache. Thanks. The episode was called "The Scales of Justice" and appears on the album "It All Started When...." among others....

It's funny, smart, and sassy. What more do you need? Big plus: Mitch is in the story, and waddayaknow, Connie is already screwing up their relationship....

Good Job, AIO people. Keep it up. (Link to full review)

468: Chains, Part 1
469: Chains, Part 2

Episode Information

Consensus: Thumbs Up (13/13 Positive Reviews)

Responses to Part Two of the show are just as positive as Part One. In Part One, people enjoyed the stretching of Whit's character in facing new situations, though a few were uncertain about this mysterious "Mary" character and wondered about a "Whit's End 2." In Part Two, people liked hearing from the Mulligans, but wished they had more lines.  And they liked hearing a little suspense at the end.

Comments by Errol (Submitted):

Another Whit's End. This time, with Tom's prompting, in Oswald Heights. Why not? Tom knows the people there, the kids need it. Everybody wants a place like Whit's End, right?..Wrong. Whit and Mary are pretty much told by the citizens of this nightmare of a town to take their ice cream sodas and get out!

When words don't work, they are met with vandals and gang members. It's in this town that Whit meets up with little, homeless Brianna and brother Tony. After some conflict, Whit finds a home for Tony and Brianna with, guess who.. the Mulligans. Nice touch, I was wondering when, other than Nick, we would be hearing from this family again.

Well, in the end, the town warms up to Mary and Whit, the new Whit's End us under construction and there is closure, right? Wrong. The peace is shattered at the end of this ep with Whit learning a camera has been installed in a dictionary in his office. Novacom? Arem? Only time will tell.

I liked "Chains " It was good to watch Whit rush in where angels fear to tread. Especially the scene where he walks right past the punk trying to frighten him. Also old characters are returning. A pattern of consistency has returned to the writing this year. And the most common thread running this season from ep to ep...who keeps breaking into Whit's office? What's up with Nova and Arem? I like it...a lot. Looking forward to hearing how the rest of this season plays out. It should interesting.

Errol gives the show 3 1/2 stars (out of four).

Part One: Whit's Flop Part 2: It's seems the end Whit's End isn't running to plan. In fact, it seems it's going nowhere. In fact, his decision to put WE up in Oswald Heights is greeted with violent protest.

Overall, it's a great episode, and I eagerly await the next segment. Whit's up to being Whit again (although I'm noticing the difference between Paul Herlinger and Hal Smith's voice more and more with each episode, but that's a minor thing), not always right. As an aside: I think this is the first time I've ever heard Whit refer to himself as just "John." Good Show!!

Part Two: A nice ending to a good show. I was a little concerned at first that it was going to continue in the vein of "Whit pursues this while Mary whines" after the first few minutes. But then that all changed when Connie said that someone broke into Whit's office. Then it really started to pick up...Tony and Brianna move in with the Mulligans (nice way of getting them back into the show), and we learn even more about this break-ins. For some reason, the scene of Whit just ignoring the "tough guy" under the bridge threatening him was memorable. Overall, good show!

Part One: I think it was a really cool show!! I think it was neat how they brought Tony back onto the show after " Best Laid Plans."

Part Two: Cool show! I think it was really cool how they left you hanging with the video camera thing! Now I have NO Idea who would want to video tape Whit! I cant wait for the next show!

Tony and his sister have found a home with the Mulligan family. I thought and I'm sure others thought that Whit would keep them. Also Tony was paid to put a book in his office, which later Whit found with a camera in it! When Whit asked him who told him to put in there, Tony said the guy had no hair and wore glasses and a hat. Could this person be AREM? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Comments by Corey (Town Hall):

Its obvious the AIO team doesn't want us to get much sleep, because I'm sure I'll be tossing and turning tonight wondering, thinking, pondering, theorizing (is that a word?) over this mysterious man and what his connection with Whit is.

Seriously, I loved how they just left you hanging. Talk about suspense. (Link to original Town Hall post)

Comments by Sarah, age 21 (Submitted):

It was pretty good! The only complaint I had with Part Two was that it was a bit predictable. When Whit said he was going to find someone to take care of the kids I immediately thought "the Allens or the Mulligans". It was good to hear from the Mulligans again though, even if it was just two sentences. On the whole it was a pretty good episode. I do wish they would carry more things across episodes with the "Novacom" deal; everything that happens is resolved in that same episode!

Sarah gives the show 3 stars (out of four).

Comments by James M, age 23 (Submitted):

Part One: Well Whit is finally doing it...Whit's End 2 in Connellsville!  He thought he had a great location but Tom wants it in Oswald Heights. Tom knows those kids. He works with them and finally they agree to build it there.  Why? No one in Oswald Heights wants it. NO ONE!

They are met with vandals and protestors. Should they continue? And what about the two homeless kids? What should Whit do? Is Tony too tough to convince? Are any of the people? Find out next week!  I enjoyed it. I wanna see what happens. Is Whit gonna be able to build it there?  Will they be happy? Or should he move to town? A situation unlike Whit has ever seen and that makes it unique and enjoyable.

Part Two:

Cool ep!  We have progress as Whit's End 2 is going up. Nice job, Whit to show them your shop and help them see it. I am glad they are liking it.  I'm still not sure about Mary and her reactions and talking OR the Mulligans taking them in (although if you have their voices, use them for more than one line).  That would be interesting to see an adventure with them there.

I'm glad Whit's idea wasn't to marry Mary and take them in. PLEASE WHIT DON'T EVER GET INVOLVED WITH HER ROMANTICALLY!  And a new suspense in the Novacom case. Is that AREM? or Does he involve with AREM? or Novacom? Can't wait to see what happens next.

James gives the show 4 1/2 stars (out of five).

Comments by Harrison, age 13 (Submitted):

Part One: Awesome episode!!! I like to see how Whit is trying to do something different with his life. Personally, I really liked Tony and Brianna. This may sound stupid, but it kinda sounded like Whit might end up adopting these kids. It would be really neat to see how AIO would change if we got 'Tony and Brianna Whittaker.' Can't wait until part II comes along!!!

Part Two: Excellent continuation of part 1! All except for the fact that the Mulligans are going to adopt Brianna and Tony. I HATE the Mulligans! How many kids do they have? Five? Three? Eight? Good ep, though.

I thought this was a very good show...great to get back to the story line rather than re-runs. I have to agree with Harrison about Whit adopting Tony and Brianna. It really sounded like that was going to happen. I can't wait for the second part.

Whit's Flop Part 2: It's seems the end Whit's End isn't running to plan.

JoyElectric gives the show 3 1/2 stars (out of four).

Comments by Jeff Cunningham (Town Hall):

Today we broke from AIO Reruns, back into the 2001 spring season, with the episode, Chains Part 1.

Odyssey, always had its main little ice cream shop, where it seems all the main Characters hang out and all the adventure happens. Kind of like the bar in the TV show Cheers or the cave where Batman hangs out. No matter what Adventures in Odyssey fan you talk to, they all must agree that the main core of the show is Whit's End. We have had everything happen there, from a robbery, to an explosion in a tunnel underneath. You got to admit that this place to pretty awesome.

The writers who bring Odyssey to life, took the most common joke to the radio... What's better then having just one chocolate chip cookie with milk? The answer: To have two chocolate chip cookie's with milk.
So, to make Odyssey better, we now give it two ice cream shops. Okay, not a bad idea. Many fans really didn't seem to like the idea at first. What, would we have Adventures in Connellsville now? That might just not bode well.

One can guess, if this second W.E. will be anything connected to Novacom.

In "Chains, Part 1" we have the typical story line of a building being torn down, and the two homeless kids who live there are resentful to the guys who tear it down. Look around, that story pops up all around over TV Shows.
Although, I must admit, Odyssey does this story much better. Mainly because we have the loving Whit, to break through to the kids, and we can see the same old caring side of Whit that we love, plus a strong Christian to give the kids what they really need.

Once listening to this episode, I must say that now two Whit's Ends sound cool. Although we're only in part 1, we kind of all know that Whit's End will go up there once they've fixed the little problems and win over the town.

The story is simple enough, we take drug addicts and feed them Ice Cream. Not bad, eh?

Seriously, the good about having two Whit's End's is that now if the writers want to even throw in a whole big storyline, and make it all come down to blowing up Whit's End, they can. They now can take some risks because, in case they mess up, they have two! Cool, eh?

Now, the bad about having two Whit's End is that those sneaky Novacom guys could use this for them somehow. Which really isn't bad, because it means adventure, and after all that is the name of the show and we all love adventure!

The other bad thing is that it could seem as if Odyssey fades away in some episodes, which is a big concern, but if these brilliant writers do it right, we have nothing to worry about.

So...bottom line, good episode, makes us want more of Whit's End. With every episode there is a draw back, and in this one her name is Mary.

I must say, that There's Something About Mary, and I'm not kidding. There is this weird feeling in "The W.E." that we got with her because she reminds Whit of her wife, not to mention Mary plays the same voice of Jenny in a past episode. It's not a really good idea to keep someone like Mary near Whit when she sounds too much like Jenny. That sounds like a 'Touched By An Angel' episode, and a little lame, plus fake.

Not only that, but you love Jenny. You think she is sweet, nice and yet firm, for the wife of Whit.  Now we have this new Mary.  She seems to take a little two much control, and her store sounds alot like "The Shop Around The Corner" from that movie, You've Got Mail, only we don't have a sweet Meg Ryan running it, just a control freak Mary, who is just a little to hard, and not good enough for Whit.

I hope that we never get into a marriage story line with Whit, most of all with this girl Mary. Margaret Faye was bad enough, personally.  If they ever do marry Whit off, that would flop unless we had the perfect match. The reason why it would flop is because the main reason it did in that old show My Three Sons, when the single Dad in the show got married. You don't do that, the whole show is about the single guy...marry him off and we have a whole different show.

So...on a scale of 1 to 10, we would have to leave "Chains, Part 1" with a 6.5, that leans very much to a 7.0...but not enough. Out of 5 stars we would have to leave it with 4, because when it comes right down to it, this was a good episode, better then I thought Marshal Younger could ever write, most off all because he breaks away from the kids slice of life in this episode.

Now...we wait for Part 2...then we wait for my second review. Until then.

Jeff gives the show 4 stars (out of five).

470: Break a Leg

Episode Information

Consensus: Thumbs Up (6/6 Positive Reviews)

Responses to Break a Leg are positive with people commenting on how good it was to hear Edwin and Shakespeare.  It was noted, however, that the show didn't have any regulars, which might have slowed it down a bit.

Comments by JoyElectric (Submitted):

It was REALLY good to hear Edwin, Shakespeare, and Dern again. These three "minor" characters add a lot to the show in general. The idea of an egotistical guy like Edwin having to live "on his own" was pretty funny, and usually Shakespeare's dry humor adds a lot. The only thing I thought of during the show is that there weren't any real solid regulars in the show to keep it zipping along. It's was good and all, but I think a little interaction with a few long-timers (like Whit in A Class Act) would have added a little. Either way, this was a fun one, and I somewhat amazed that this is the same show that I was embarrassed by last year at this time!!

JoyElectric gives the show 3 stars (out of four).

Comments by Errol (Submitted):

After listening to "Break A Leg", I thought of the old classic Top-40 song "You Don't Know What You're Got, till It's Gone." After a bicycle accident, Cal is left without a bike, Walter Shakespeare is left with a broken leg, and Edwin Blackgaard is left...without Walter Shakespeare. Some of the comedy is top notch with Blackgaard asking Cal how to operate a stop watch, or getting instruction from Walter Shakespeare on which way to open a door. The first lesson we learn is not to take the tings we have for granted, you just might lose them. But I also walked away with, other than our Lord, having such dependence on other people or things is utter folly. This was the first meaty role for Blackgaard and Shakespeare since "The Merchant Of Odyssey." It was great having Corey Burton back as Shakespeare and Cryin' Bryan Dern. Great acting all around.

Errol gives the show 4 stars (out of four).

471: Fifteen Minutes

Episode Information

Consensus: Thumbs Up (9/9 Positive Reviews)

Fifteen Minutes is getting all positive reviews. Many enjoyed the latest Marshal "slice of life," calling it another classic.  Reviewers enjoyed Jack Allen's character and the call-sign "I'm gonna call the exterminator."

Comments by Dawey, age 12 (Submitted):

I wasn't overly impressed with FIFTEEN MINUTES. I mean, there have been a lot more in the Spring 2001 Season.

But at points it was funny, and I liked the "I'm gonna call the exterminator!" line. Jack and Mitch were among the funniest, and Bart a little.

Dawey gives the show 3 1/2 stars (out of four).

Comments by Jacob Isom (Submitted):

Boy was that a good episode! Connie is definitely back to her usual self, and Jack... I love Jack's character! This episode dawned on me. I think the reason for this whole new Whit's End storyline is that it gives the AIO writers a chance to bring Jack Allen back to Whit's End, seeing as how two Whit's Ends will cause a problem when it comes to working schedules. There was something that Odyssey had when Jack was around. Love. The new Whit doesn't seem that way to me...what about you? I sure hope that's what they are doing!

Also I noticed how original this episode was! I especially liked the ending about how Cal and Greg O'Neal were sitting and moping and up behind them comes this lady! It was funny seeing Break a Leg tied into Fifteen Minutes! I think she recognized Cal and thought that he and O'Neal were the culprits who were ruining her garden! I really like it when they mention past episodes. That's what I liked about "I Slap Floor" Connie mentioned the old ! days of Odyssey when she mentioned being a game contestant on a quiz show and how she taught Eugene to drive! It's nice to know that they actually remember that stuff and are bringing it all back here and there! What they need to do is mention the older characters and what they did with their lives, say college? Marriage? Children? According to Odyssey, they all moved away! How realistic!

I think that "Fifteen Minutes" has been one of the best so far this year! And it's weird saying that because last year I was saying, "I hate those fifteen minute episodes!" Now I am saying, "Wow! 'Fifteen Minutes' was really good!" Hmmmm...... Did you all notice that Greg O'Neal was played by the old Rusty Gordon from the Bones of Wrath? = )

Jacob gives the show 3 1/2 stars (out of four).

Comments by Mark (Submitted):

It was great!!!! I especially liked hearing Jack in Whits End again. I do wish they wouldn't make such a big deal about Connie and Mitch dating though. But over all, it was terrific!

Mark gives the show 3 stars (out of four).

Comments by JoyElectric (Submitted):

Good show! "Older" fans here may have caught the subtle Rocky/Karate Kid jokes, which made it all the better. It's good to hear Jack still, and listening to Mitch and Connie argue is really fun. Greg's catch-phrase was as dumb as could be (about par for Primetime), and his comments at the end to Alex about fame were great...something most of Hollywood should take to heart.

JoyElectric gives the show 3 1/2 stars (out of four).

Comments by Errol (Submitted):

The late Andy Warhol was once quoted as saying that in everyone's lifetime, they will experience fifteen minutes of fame. In "Fifteen Minutes," we follow the lives of two who have been left pretty empty by their fleeting minutes in the spotlight. Alex Jefferson has broken the all time "12 and under mini golf record," one held by Bart Rathbone for 30 years. Alex enjoys his fame only long enough to have Mandy top his record. After a failing attempt at show business, Gregg O'Neal returns from Hollywood to Odyssey only to face another letdown. We learn that sometimes it's good to enjoy our small moments of fame, but then get on with our life. This ep had good performances. "Fifteen Minutes" is sans Whit, but Jack Allen was back, as was Mitch, Arthur Dent, Connie and Bart Rathbone. I loved the conversation that Jack is pulled into by Mitch on how Connie smells. Open mouth...insert foot. Bart was also in his prime attempting to coach Alex on the finer points of being a champion golfer....Right!! Enjoyed "Fifteen Minutes," and think in most respects, this year has really been a comeback for AIO.

Errol gives the show 3 1/2 stars (out of four).

Comments by James M, age 23 (Submitted):

Good. I liked the Mitch-Connie storyline. Was he jealous? Well, he was right about Greg. I liked Greg a lot and the storyline. I liked the Alex golf thing especially with Bart and stuff. Funny stuff! My only problem was it seemed beforehand they said an old character would be coming back and I felt that was very misleading. But Greg-Connie-Mitch was funny and I liked Mandy being humble. Good to hear from Arthur Dent and if you don't like my review I am gonna call the exterminator!!

ALSO: I enjoyed Jacks reactions. He said, "I have a fuzzy TV"...that's the Jack I love. He is so funny!

James gives the show 3 1/2 stars (out of four).

Comments by OdysseyFan (Town Hall):

So you were expecting an old character to return? Sorry. However if you were expecting an old, familiar VOICE to return, you'll like this show. Marshal's in high gear with another great show full of great lines, great interaction and interesting twists. The "Karate Kid" reference was my fav!

Comments by DrBlackgaard (Town Hall):

I was VERY well done, as good as nearly any episode from the 90s! Odyssey HAS defiantly gotten better!

DrBlackgaard gives the show 9 stars (out of ten).

Comments by AIOFan (Town Hall):

I really thought Mitch was funny in this episode! Connie was seeing life through rose colored glasses again obviously. I mean, WHO would think the "I'm gonna call the exterminator" "punch line" is funny? I mean really? But Mitch's lines were funny, especially the "Jack, doesn't she smell better than usual?" Jack's hesitation to answer any question was also humorous, although I can't quite understand it.

472: Welcoming Wooton

Episode Information

Consensus: Thumbs Up (14/19 Positive Reviews)

Fans view of "Welcoming Wooton" depended primarily on whether or not they liked the new character—Wooton Basset.  While many liked the character, a few found him strange, annoying, or boring.  Others praised the episode for being funny and introducing a fun new character.  Will Wooton play a part in future shows?  Wait and see...

Comments by Thomas, age 37 (Submitted):

I think that the Wooten character is great. It's nice to have someone I can relate to. Sometimes, I find myself in circumstances that put people over responsibilities and getting in trouble for it. The only thing I'd change in his character is the voice. He sounded like he's just waken up from a nap. I think that he would have been more energized because he's a people person. Extroverts are energized by people but Wooten sounds like he's been on a deserted island for a few years. Charge up his batteries and he'll be great.

I also like the whimsical dimension that Wooton brings to the show. We all have a Wooton inside of us and although we may not collect Smiley Meal characters, there's always something we enjoy that others just don't quite understand. Wooten seems comfortable with himself even though he's not at the top of his class. We could all use a good lesson from him on that.

Overall, I think the program was about the importance of people. Wooten found a good way of not letting his priorities of people and relationships get smothered by the worldly values of money. So many parents and kids have lost focus of the importance of relationships. The world values people by their achievements and dollars. Wooten just values people. I'd rather have him as a friend than his boss.

I like him and I hope he returns along with that speedy delivery guy with the cool name.

Thomas gives the show 3 1/2 stars (out of four).

Comments by Alissa Salzgeber, age 13 (Town Hall):

Not bad story, but slightly pointless. Meaning you don't get the point with the story. Good story, though!

Alissa gives the show 2 stars (out of four).

Comments by Ian Chai, age 34 (Town Hall):

Interesting character... a funny guy with a *past*. Hints of a bad childhood ("I never got toys as a child, because... well, never mind that.") and a rich inheritance (he doesn't really need the job?) Ooooo, mysterious.

I agree with Mark, though: here's this guy everyone knows but we've never even *heard* of before? Hmm... may have been better to grab Chris' mailman Randall and reshape him so that there'll be continuity? But then maybe they've got plans for Wooten that would contradict what Randall has done.

Ian gives the show 3 stars (out of four).

Comments by Corey (Town Hall):

I agree with you JoyE, Wooten was loopy without being annoying. Kinda like if Harlow Doyle had an actual personality and wasn't just a dumb guy stereotype (although I think the dumb guy character is funny and I like Harlow). I liked Wooten. He's no Bernard, but then again no one is. Who wouldn't like a guy who could bring a spiritual analogy out of a comic book? I actually did that with GILLIGAN'S ISLAND once and I am currently working on an essay comparing the Song of Solomon with Archie comics (just kidding about the Archie Song of Solomon thing, but serious about the Gilligan's Island). I liked how, like JoyE said, he has a history that I am sure we will find out more about.

Wooten is much cooler than Nick. Not that I don't like Nick, but Nick kinda has this 80's cool feel to him and I DO NOT like the styles of the 80's. Wooten has this new fresh cool. He is kinda like me. Although I am sorry to say I am not as much as a people person as Wooten is, but Wooten's line about which recordings he doesn't like sounded so much like something I might say.

All in all, I like Wooten and am glad he is joining the cast.

Comments by Kevin J (Submitted):

Welcoming Wooton was an overall good lighthearted episode. I like Wooton... he's just a little crazy. But we need some insane people in Odyssey!! What kind of world with this be without hilarious insane people. So ya, he's alright. Still, one wonders why they introduced him. He has to have some role in the continuing plot, right? So I guess we'll see what that is.

Kevin gives the show 3 stars (out of four).

Comments by DrBlackgaard, age 14 (Submitted):

I didn't really like "Welcoming Wooton". I don't know about the rest of you... but he struck me as being a kind of mentally slow/retarded character. Especially in the first scene where he is talking to Whitt in his house. The whole thing about him collecting toys because he didn't have any when he was a kid was also kind of lame. It reminded me of many of the shows from last spring :(

DrBlackgaard gives the show 1 1/2 stars (out of four).

Comments by Jacob Isom, age 15 (Submitted):

At first I wasn't really sure whether or not I would like it, considering that they chose a character as weird as Wooton. But I then heard it again. Boy, is it better the second time you hear it! The first time I heard it I was judging the show too much and the second time I was enjoying what the show had to offer! If you haven't heard "Welcoming Wooton" you hafta hear it! I have liked pretty much every episode this Spring except for Snow Day, and this one definitely beats Snow Day! I really like Wooton's character. He is a little too corny in some areas (Example: the slide jutting out of his house), but other than that I like the way he doesn't stop for punctuation marks in his speech. He's a really quirky guy and I really hope they make more episodes about him. I have been wondering...is he mentally insane? Hmmmm... Only time will tell! He's probably got a pretty interesting history! I probably wouldn't have written a single word above! twenty four hours ago!

Jacob gives the show 3 stars (out of four).

Comments by Jared Walczak, age 14 (Submitted):

I've enjoyed most of the episodes this season thus far, but this is one is an exception. The only good news is that Wooten will NOT be working at Whit's End!  Nick is plenty bad enough!

In my opinion, the next episode in AIO should be "Waving Bye To Wooten." Wooten's character was very poor and very strange...was he mentally challenged? No adult I know collects toys like that, and his constant talking about cartoons is rather annoying. I can only hope he doesn't stay long.

Jared gives the show 1 1/2 stars (out of four).

Comments by Michael P., age 17 (Submitted):

This has got to be the best episode of the season! They have all been great, but this one was just hilarious. I loved this episode; it had me rolling in the floor laughing. Wooton Basset is a great addition to AIO universe! Welcome Wooton! I hope we hear more of you.

Michael gives the show 4 stars (out of four).

This episode was great! I loved it! Although, is Wooton Randell the mailman at the bigging of AIO in 1989?

Ben gives the show 3 1/2 stars (out of four).

Comments by Mark (Submitted):

I thought this episode was pretty well done, not quite as well as some of the recent past, but still pretty good. I thought one issue that they should have covered (and they might in the future) was the issue of reliability. Wooton had the obligation to do his job, he shouldn't have let anything get in the way of that. Other than that I really liked the character of Wooton. I hope we see him more in the future. One thing the writers should try to do is mention characters in the past. I mean, we have never heard of Wooton (or the Greg O'Neil person) but they are supposed to be well known in Odyssey. How much sense does that make? Oh well. A well done job.

Mark gives the show 3 stars (out of four).

Comments by Errol (Submitted):

Into the quiet lives in Odyssey.. Enter Wooton, an affable, sweet guy who is a cross between Gilligan and Stan Laurel. Wooton's passion? People.. Talking with...spending time with...listening to....  Maybe he spends too much time with people. This leads to his firing as a letter carrier, and later he resigns his job as a "Speedy Carrier" because he can't spend time with the people he delivers packages to. Later, public outcry helps him get back on with the postal service. The lesson we learn from this little man, is that our joy should be people. Willing to listen, ready to help, and always willing to love the unloved, young and old. This goofy character teaches a mighty lesson. I can't wait to hear his character develop as the series moves on. Maybe he will become a full time Whit's End employee. He would fit right in. Good show.

Errol gives the show 3 1/2 stars (out of four).

Comments by JoyElectric (Town Hall):

He's loopy, but not annoying. He's a Christian who uses PowerBoy to teach the Gospel--something I think Whit would like. I was afraid that he was going to be a klutz who screwed up everything he touched and would be used strictly for laughs. Not so. They gave him a personality and a history, and I'm sure it'll take more than one episode to "figure him out."

Besides, can you imagine Eugene and Wooton in an argument?? How about Wooton and Bernard??

Comments by OdysseyFan (Town Hall):

Subject: I didn't

You gotta be kidding! The guy is more boring than "Randall" (No Offense to Phil), this was even worse than the episode that Nick started working at Whit's End, and now he has his job back, so he'll just be "stopping by" to "help out" only "once in a while."

Comments by HowdyPardner (Town Hall):

Subject: Me either.

Comments by Paul Brown (Town Hall):

New odyssey mail man Wooton...or should I say new package guy. Or should I say Whit's End worker? What job will this new odyssey person have next? and what's the deal with Nick? I didn't even know he was with the show anymore. He hasn't been on the show lately. Who plays Wooton voice actor?

Comments by AIOFan (Town Hall):

I kind of like the episode, although I think Wooten might get really hard on the ears! Overall, I liked Wooten. What's his last/first name anyway? It looks like he had the same problem as my dad does in physical therapy. Caring about the people they're serving more than the job and trying to reconcile the two.
473: Breaking Point

Episode Information

Consensus: Thumbs Up (11/11 Positive Reviews)

Fans are scrambling with the latest theories on this season's cliff-hanger ending, but everyone so far has agreed that they liked the show and all the suspense.  While some fans are sure about Mary or Wooton, they did like the adventure portions of the show.

Comments by Dawey, age 12 (Submitted):

I say "GREAT EPISODE, MARSHAL YOUNGER!" Very suspenseful and EXCITING. And Wooten is kind of annoying. New Harlow Doyle? Probably not.

Of course we knew AIO would leave us totally hanging. The standard AIO suspense ending. The boiler-plate talk between two "bad guys".

Great episode, Marshal Younger. That makes 12 out of 14 episodes in the Spring 2001 Season get a SUPER-EXCELLENT-GREAT rating. Pretty good... Last season was 8 out of 11 (but two were almost SEG).

Now I will go on a fast until September.

Dawey gives the show 4 stars (out of four).

Comments by Corey (Town Hall):

Yes, wonderful episode. I loved how it seemed like just a normal episode then we hear that Barry took off with the plans and the circuit board. Then we hear BB. I was wondering when we would hear him. I didn't really think it was Dent. I also like how at first Barry seems like a Richard Maxwell meets Wooton type character and then we find out he does corporate espionage. Wow, lot of suspense to keep us hanging 'til next season. Also isn't this like the first time we have had a cliffhanger season ending on AIO?

Also Wooten knows Maxwell. Maxwell was mentioned. Does anyone smell a return? Maybe I'm paranoid, but it made me think.

Nick has a garage band. Cool. That was one thing I always thought they should have on AIO. A garage band. I'm sure we probably won't hear about it again, but I would love it if the writers played off of this. You hear me AIO writers?

Corey gives the show 4 stars (out of five).

Comments by DrBlackgaard (Town Hall):

It was a GREAT episode! I really liked the part about how Barry goes by several names! This means we never know when he comes back and acts like someone else using one of his other names! The guy he sells the plans to is definitely the "new Blackgaard", the one who is telling Dent, Mitch (if he's bad, Eugene, Barry, (and hopefully Glossman) what to do. I can't wait to hear more of him! This was a great episode to keep us on our toes the whole summer.

Nick is up to his eyebrows in work at Whit's End, Whit is up to his eyebrows in work trying to get the new Whit's End operational. Finally, at Mary's advice, Whit allows her "old friend" Barry Muntz to build the new Imagination Station. This is where this ep gets interesting. Barry skips town with the blue print. Later we find out that Mary's "old friend" goes by four different names and is suspected by the law of corporate stealing. At the end, Barry is talking to a mysterious stranger who basically tells him this had better work, or you are dead meat. Ahhhh the plot really thickens. Who is this stranger? Is he linked to Novacom? The season is wrapping up on a real exciting note. Some good gags. Wooten telling Nick his shirt could pass for prison clothes. Also the slight toward Will Ryan; "Eugene never works, Did he join a union or something" ( Something to that affect ). Looking forward to seeing what happens.

Errol gives the show 3 stars (out of four).

Comments by James M, age 23 (Submitted):

OK we need a NEW temp name for this new Big Boss. I name him BB. we won't find out his real name for at least 4 months. Anyone have suggestions for his temp name?

1) I never trusted Barry. I knew he was bad 2) Mary is still annoying and pushy. I NEVER liked her. I knew from beginning. Why was she so pushy? 3) Wooton was kinda retarded. Maybe he's hanging around Jack too much with that dream. He he!

Who's this new boss? Ok, Arthur dent is NOT the new Blackgaard new BIG bad guy. He's bad, but BB is the NEW Blackgaard. He's the main enemy. What does he want with Imagination station? Is he involved in Nova Com? Does he have anything to do with Dent? Blackgaard Saga? AREM? Is he involved with the Whit's End break ins? What do these people want? Why? What's up? Questions to last WHOLE SUMMER!  I loved the tension. I loved the drama. What about Whit's end 2? How will Whit handle it? Who will work there? Great to hear from Nick. I do hope they keep Wooton. I do like him, I do and understand why a lot of y'all don't though. What will happen? Find out next season! BB rules. Kinda.

James gives the show 4 stars (out of four).

Comments by OdysseyFan (Town Hall):

Wonderful!
So Many Questions! I'm Guessing the mysterious Man is the same one that has he been behind the Camera in Whit's Office and the Wireless Modem Tap. Also Novacom could be involved as their "Destination Station" show could benefit from a merchandising outlet using the plans for the IS, or perhaps the IS plans are part of the RWS, I found this episode somehow familiar with the first video.

Oh, and I loved the "jab" at Will Ryan in the comment about Eugene going "union".

And it was nice to hear Nick again, good continuity with his "band" WD-40.

Comments by Jared (Town Hall):

Welcome to Break Point with Chuck Colson...oops, wrong one! Welcome to The Breaking Point, on Odyssey, by Focus on the Family...

This story did have a good plot-line to it that would work well with later AIOs. Most of the story was rather predictable, but still good. IMHO, Barry sold the plans to some dealer who will present the plans to multiple corporations. But in the end, the plans will probably be purchased by Novacom. They are bad, we just don't know how or why yet. Sure they produce bad TV shows - stuff I would never watch - but that sure doesn't put them on the level of Regis Blackgaard, Philip Glossman, Filby, Mustafa, and all the other criminals AIO has invented over the years. Compared to the others, we've known about Novacom for a long time. With Blackgaard, every episode after he was introduced dealt with the Applesauce plot - there weren't lots of episodes in between. Whatever sinister schemes (to borrow half the title of an AIO album) Novacom comes up with, I hope they hurry up and do them!

I really got off track there! This is really about Breaking Point, not Novacom! :)

The Breaking Point ends with a good, interesting scene, and makes us all wait until fall to know what happens! How horrible! Why can't they have a new Odyssey every week? Just hire a few more people, put everyone to work Monday-Saturday, from 1 AM to 11 PM, and we'll have plenty of AIOs! :)

I thought this episode was really, really good... I loved how we knew it would be horrible if Whit gave up his plans. I thought Mary might have been the one after them, working for Novacom. But it looks like there's a bigger scheme in play again. Don't even BEGIN to think Novacom's good though. Don't forget we still have that shaky agreement with Tom Riley for the antennae and other various weird things.

AREM is most likely with the Big Bad Guy... We might as well call him BB. BB may be the owner of Novacom, or something like that (don't forget Dent just works for them). But I doubt it. I wouldn't put it past Odyssey to have more than one bad guy... maybe working for the same goal. The introduction of BB was chilling. He wants Barry (who I doubt we'll hear more from) to leave the country for perhaps 2 years!?? That may give a clue as to how long this arc will continue. Of course, because Whit's a genius, the plans won't work... so BB will be back, and hopefully bad.

Good episode... I can't wait till next season!!!

Kevin gives the show 4 stars (out of four).
