Review
Characters:
Whit, Tom Riley, Connie Kendall, Jenny Whittaker, Phillip Glossman, Officer David Harley, Jenny

Notes:
This episode was where we finally learned all about the past of Whit's End and that Whit was a schoolteacher and is very rich.

Slimy Phillip Glossman and Jenny Whittaker, Whit's wife, were first introduced here.

The Webster Development Company (which must be owned by Dr. Blackgaard) is first introduced here.  In AIO84, Blackgaard tells Richard Maxwell that he tried to buy the Fillmore Recreation Center ("Whittaker's building") back when Whit bought it.  We can assume that Blackgaard wanted the old building for the mineral located underneath of it (since no better explanation is given).  However, this would mean that he knew about the mineral before Whit (or that Whit bought the building for a reason other than to use it as his wife wanted).  Also, in AIO160, Bart says the Webster Development Company is putting in the Electric Palace and in AIO334, Glossman says Blackgaard owns the store (and is confirmed by Dunkee, the attorney, in AIO342).  Anyway, what all this in-depth jargon is trying to say is that this episode was what really began the entire Blackgaard saga.

An Officer Harley show.

During this episode (between the time that Jenny dies and the time that Tom Riley and Officer Harley visit Whit at his home), Whit and Jack Allen must travel to Nebraska and all of the events of Clara (AIO365) must take place.

This same incident is cataloged in about the same detail in the Odyssey book 4: Behind the Locked Door, although Phillip Glossman and the Webster Development Company were left out.  Could it be because Paul McCusker, the writer of the AIO books is the voice of Glossman?

Notes:
PARENTAL WARNING: This is a mystery about a 40-year-old murder.  It contains subject matter that may be too intense for younger children.

GOOF ALERT: In this episode, Whit says "I haven't done this much digging since I was in the army."  However, as made clear in AIO93 and AIO94, Whit was in the navy.
Very slight possibilities: (a) Whit "transferred from the army to the navy (quite unlikely), (b) Whit used army collectively (i.e., "armed forces") to refer to the military in general (very unlikely for someone in a specific branch of the military), (c) Whit lied (which is simply not a possibility since Whit NEVER lies!).

VERSION DIFFERENCE:  The broadcast version of the program has a longer introduction with Chris explaining what happened last time.

Notes:
PARENTAL WARNING: This adventure about spies and international intrigue may be too intense for younger children.

AIO illustrations show Whit with Terry Johnson running around a corner from the bad guy.  Perhaps writers originally intended to introduce Whit's secret past here.

Portions of this show were heavily inspired by the movie North by Northwest, including the opening of a mysterious character calling Terry's father by another name, the travel by train, and the cliffhanger scene.

Be the First to Review this Show!
Characters:
Tom Riley, Agnes Riley, Whit, Connie Kendall, June Kendall, Rodney, *Fiona Donneral, *Harold Whittaker

Notes:
GOOF ALERT (Or is it?): In this episode, Whit says that when he was young, his family "moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, where my father...taught at Duke University,"   While it is true that Duke University is in Durham, not Raleigh, the two are neighboring cities and it is quite possible that his family lived in Raleigh and his father drove across town to teach at Duke.  Yes, it is true that professors usually live not far off campus, but this solution is at least possible.

VERSION DIFFERENCE: In the broadcast version of this episode, Chris says she is thankful for AIO production people. She then gives a tour of the studio.  She checks in with the Music Deptartment, and the theme is played.  She stops at sound effects and loud sirens are blaring.  She tries the story department, but they are sleeping.   She talks to Chuck Bolte about his important decision about the future of AIO—where he will eat lunch.  It's a very funny sequence and I wish it was on the album version.  Evidently, it was removed from the album Secrets, Suprises, and Sensational Stories (3), but it was left on in the album Welcome to Odyssey (Classics 1).
